Want to develop and perfect your German in a Westphalian city known for its colorful historic tradition and thriving contemporary culture? Register for German courses in Krefeld to explore everything this "Velvet and Silk City" has to offer. Krefeld earned its nickname due to the textile industry that blossomed here in the 18th century. Today, students can celebrate that industrial heyday by attending the town's vibrant September fashion shows. During these fashion shows, which are interspersed with spectacular dance performances, local retailers and designers show off their winter collections. Students can also check out one of Germany's largest craft markets during Whitsun weekend in the spring, when the flax market held around the medieval Linn Castle in Krefeld's historic district transforms into a dazzling open-air bazaar. Museum lovers have a variety of exhibitions to choose from: whether you'd like to check out the Museum of Silk Culture or any of the city's three first-class art museums, there is something for everyone. Krefeld is also an excellent place to taste some traditional German cuisine. Spend an afternoon in a quaint brewpub, many of which date back to the 19th century, and enjoy a pint of local beer and some sauerbraten. Students at a German school in Krefeld will find that this city is a particularly good place to perfect your language skills, since Krefeld has hosted a prestigious language program for American students for over forty years. Krefeld residents' combination of Hochdeutsch, the standard form of German used throughout the country and in language textbooks, and distinct native dialect ensures that your spoken German will soak up some local color.
