Novosibirsk is Russia’s third largest city, and the largest city in Siberia. Founded in 1893, the city was the site for one of the Trans-Siberian Railway bridges crossing the river of Ob. When the bridge was completed in 1897, Novosibirsk became a regional transportation hub. The city eventually became a large commercial and industrial area and developed an agricultural processing industry as well. By 1917, Novosibirsk was the home to multiple churches, cinemas, and multiple levels of schools. In fact, in 1913 Novosibirsk became one of the first places in Russia to mandate education at the primary level. Students taking Russian courses in Novosibirsk should be sure to explore all aspects of this city. A visit to St. Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral, built between 1896 and 1899, shows a great example of the Neo-Byzantine architectural style. No stay would be complete without a visit to the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. It is the largest theatre in Russia, located at the heart of the city in Lenin Square. In the square, dine at an open air café. Not far from Lenin Square, visit one of several museums like the Local Studies Museum or the State Art Museum to learn about Russian history, and see the beautiful artwork from the region. Students enrolled in Russian school in Novosibirsk will find that the winters can be harsh, but bearable. Stave off the cold by taking in some music in a jazz club, or meeting friends at one of the many Irish pubs found in the city. Novosibirsk offers many choices in terms of night time entertainment, and has areas that are reminiscent of Las Vegas with plenty of glitz and glamour. With plenty to see and do, students will find that Novosibirsk is an unique destination.
