The USC Language Center promotes and supports the study of basic language for all students at USC, including the supporting of coursework that develops language capacity for the professional and educational aspirations of students. We promote language as a context for understanding global affairs and to develop an understanding of one's heritage and the heritage of others. The Language Center is a gathering place for interaction among cultures and language speakers and is a support center for the learning and teaching of languages.

USC is a university which places great importance upon the ability of its students to function successfully in a global, multi-cultural environment. We want undergraduate students to have extensive exposure to cultures other than their own, including the languages of those other cultures. We encourage students to integrate opportunities to study abroad into their overall USC experience, and students may choose from over 80 study abroad programs of varying experiences and durations, including "Problems Without Passports," research-based courses, and language immersion programs.

A marked degree of fluency in the language of other cultures is an essential tool for developing an in-depth understanding of them. The ability to speak, listen, read, and write in other languages, therefore, is imperative for students to have in this global age. In order to accomplish this goal for USC students, language programs are proficiency-oriented and standards-based. By proficiency orientation we mean students learn to speak, listen, read, and write in ways that are immediately useful when that student is immersed in a real-world setting in another culture. Standards-based refers to the national standards on foreign language learning that relate not only to mastery of the language itself, but also to connections that students make between languages, cultures, and various academic areas; to comparisons between languages and cultures; and to a knowledge of communities that speak a particular language.

Mentor Language Institute is located in the heart of Hollywood. Our campus is on the famous Hollywood Boulevard! There are many cool things to see in our neighborhood. Just outside our school is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theatre (where movie premieres are held), the Dolby Theatre (where the Academy Awards are held), the Hollywood Wax Museum (where you can see life-like figures of your favorite celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Jackson), the El Capitan Theatre (where most Disney movie premieres are held), and many more museums, landmarks, and other attractions that celebrate L.A.’s entertainment heritage. Walking distance from our campus is Hollywood & Highland, which is a giant entertainment complex with more than 70 shops, over 25 restaurants, and great nightlife venues, including a bowling alley, arcade, and nightclub. We are also very close to the Hollywood/Highland Metro Station where you can take a direct train to places such as DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) and Universal Studios. We are also close to the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (where Cinespia events are held throughout the year), improv comedy clubs, dozens of retro-cool bars, and dozens of velvet-roped nightclubs.

Students are always welcome during school hours to borrow materials from CWC’s collection of instructional and recreational books, games, CDs and DVDs to supplement their classroom instruction. Our job as ESL educators goes far beyond simply teaching English. Its one thing to teach a student English, but it is a completely different thing to teach them the experience of English. With a forward-thinking attitude, we are constantly striving to be at the forefront of the latest technology and learning methodologies in the industry. In so doing, we are able to flip our classrooms, allowing our students to dictate their own education and interact with the language as they learn it. We strongly believe in providing an authentic education, one that simulates English in action, as it exists today. It is our goal as an institution to ensure that, upon completing our program, our students have reached levels of proficiency that meet or exceed CERF standards. More importantly, however, it is our goal to endow them with capability to practically apply those skills in future pursuits, whatever they may be.
